OPERATING PRINCIPLE
The core product of Recycling Sciences, Inc. is a range of different sized all-stainless steel distillation systems for solvents that either operate as a “batch distiller” or a “Continuous Flow distiller”. Pictures of all of RSI systems are part of these web pages.
RSI tried to keep the use of all RSI devices as simple as possible: the operator pours or pumps the contaminated waste or waste solvent into the solvent distillation tank, and either closes and clamps the lid or starts the process for continuous operation. He has selected a processing temperature for the solvent product to be distilled. He has connected the system to the proper power source, and either positioned the correct sized container to collect the clean solvent or checked the pumps, valves and lines that directs the distilled solvent product to its proper location. With the push of one button, solvent distillation begins.
Temperature control is done by a proprietary circuit, designed and owned by Recycling Sciences. This intrinsically safe circuit that is certified for use in the explosive solvent atmospheres that may be encountered in distillation of petroleum-based solvents is a part of each RSI system. A thermocouple which senses both the product and condenser temperature, will switch off automatically when distillation is complete. Distillation of solvent , in many cases, can be accomplished unsupervised, or even overnight.
All RSI systems operate on the same principal as a standard double boiler. A heat transfer medium surrounds the base and sides of the inner tank. This medium is heated to a controlled temperature by either an immersion heating element in the distillation system or the medium is heated in a separate unit and pumped into the inner solvent chamber. As the contaminated solvent product begins to boil, vapors rise and enter the sealed Tube-N-Tube condenser. This vapor, cooled by the condenser, reverts to a liquid and is drawn into a clean holding tank. The chemical properties of most distilled solvent products are not altered by this process and can te refused indefinitely. Suspended dirts and solids cannot be vaporized and are either wiped clean from the shiny stainless steel tank or processed and left in a nylon cooking bag in the bottom of the tank.
PRODUCT FEATURES
RSI SYSTEMS ARE EITHER BATCH OR CONTINUOUS FLOW SOLVENT RECOVERY SYSTEMS
The denominations of the different solvent batch systems denote the tank size in gallons. Their distillation capacity is usually twice their denomination size per an eight-hour shift. The common features include:
- Stainless steel construction, including an all-stainless condenser
- Top quality electric heaters mounted in explosion proof housings
- Built to National Fire Prevention Association requirements
- Intrinsically safe electrical housing and components
- Modular electronic components
- Plus or minus 1 degree thermocouple and Fuji controller
- Each is built to withstand vacuum
- Self-contained, environment saving water recirculators
- Most are Fully Portable
- Separate safety high-limit switches in the heaters
- Operator friendly
RECYCLING SCIENCE PORTABLE SYSTEMS
RSI - 5
This system comes in 3 models: A Counter Top System, a Lab System or a completely self-contained, cart-mounted distillation system. It will distill any solvent with a boiling range from 100 F to 450 F. It has its own self-contained water re-circulating system and an electric powered vacuum system is standard on the Lab model and as an accessory on others. It is ideal for both medical and testing laboratories and other businesses where small amounts of expensive solvents are handled.
RSI - 15
This system also comes in 3 models: A Counter Top System, a Lab System or a completely self-contained, cart-mounted distillation system. In addition, with the necessary pumps, motors and float switches, it is a Continuous Flow model. It will also distill any solvent with a boiling range from 100 F to 450 F and has its own self-contained water re-circulating system. An electric powered vacuum system is standard on the Lab model and the Continuous Flow model and as an accessory on others. It is ideal for both medical and testing laboratories and other businesses where small amounts of expensive solvents are handled.
RSI - 30
The RSI - 30 is the nucleus of our systems. It is referred to as the "drum-a-day" system, because it can easily recycle and recover 55 gallons in an eight-hour shift. Our 5500 Watt oil immersion heater provides the greatest throughput of any 30 gallon system. An electric powered vacuum system is an accessory for the RSI-30
RSI - 55
This product comes in several models. Each is designed to distill the contents of a 55 gallon drum at one time. Some are Continuous Flow models, but all have an electric powered vacuum as standard equipment. Generally, the operator just sets it and goes about his business. Providing on-site distillation eliminates hazardous material storage and transportation costs. As we said, all RSI-55's comes complete with vacuum tank for distillation.
RSI - 250 Continuous Flow
The Recycling Sciences RSI-250 CF, is a 250 gallon tank capacity solvent recovery system that is equipped with its own electric powered vacuum systems as well as its own electric powered loading and unloading pumps. It is designed to be durable, simple to operate and safe. It is a Continuous Flow distiller that will distill up to three gallons per minute of contaminated Methanol, depending on the temperature of the incoming product as well as other factors. It is designed with intrinsically safe electronic controls.
RSI - VAC
Use of a vacuum unit during distillation lowers the boiling point temperature, and therefore speeds distillation. This not only makes high boiling point solvents safer to recover, but also greatly decreases the recovery cost. All RSI-VACS are totally electric powered. They are manufactured with an all stainless steel tank and include an automatic shutoff valve to minimize electrical use once the desired vacuum is reached.
All RSI distillers are designed to meet the requirements of:
USA: Class 1. Division 1, Group D. NFPA 483
UNITED KINGDOM: Zone 1, Gas Group 1, B55345
CANADA: C22.2.157: CENELEC: BS 5501
